Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen remodeling is one of those projects that can really breathe new life into your home. The kitchen is often the center of a lot of activity in a home, so a kitchen remodel can have a wonderful impact on the whole family.

In some ways, it might seem like a good idea for you to do the kitchen remodeling yourself. After all, you live in the house and you are in the kitchen every day, so why not take on that project on your own? For most people, this is a bad idea. This is a big project that will require skills in finish carpentry, plumbing, lighting, electrical, not to forget extensive design work. The average homeowner does not possess those skills, so there would be some big risks with potential flooding or electricity problems. Not to mention that all of the work that is done must be finished in compliance with the building codes for that area. It’s a huge advantage to have a good contractor, because he already has these necessary skills and experience from many kitchen remodeling projects.

One of the first things to decide is the actual reason for the renovation. There may be multiple reasons, but one that we hear quite commonly is that it’s time to replace the appliances. Of course, you could just buy new appliances and have them installed, but a brand-new refrigerator might look a bit out of place next to outdated cabinets. And a new stove will probably look funny sitting between 15-year old countertops.

Some people want to do kitchen remodeling in order to change the “function” of the kitchen. For example, if your current kitchen is too small to comfortably fit a table. This means that even a late-night snack would have to be in the dining room if you want to sit down. If the kitchen could be a little larger, you could put in a small table and a couple of chairs to accommodate a quick informal meal or a cup of tea.

That leads us to another common reason for doing a kitchen remodeling – added space. It seems that no kitchen can ever be big enough! On most days, every member of your family probably spends some time in the kitchen, and there may even be times when the whole family is in the kitchen at the same time. When the kitchen has more space, there is less bumping elbows and everyone feels more comfortable in doing what they need to do. More space also often means additional storage space such as a larger pantry (or the creation of a pantry if you don’t already have one).

One thing to consider when we are talking about increasing the size of the kitchen – that space has to come from somewhere. Sometimes an adjacent room has some space that can be taken, or perhaps we can move an outside wall out a few feet. Moving outside walls can turn this into a bigger project than originally planned, but in some cases our customers have determined that the extra expanse is worth it because of the great benefits. We can give you input on this so that the kitchen remodeling project gives you the kitchen you have always dreamed of, yet stays within the allowed budget.
